Details of the BYBA Skills Contests for Grades 3rd - 4th
Date / Times for Event:
- Skills Contest for Grades 3-4 will be held at the Chenery MS on Friday, March 4th
- Girls 3rd/4th Grades will participate at 6 PM
- Boys 3rd/4th Grades will participate at 7:30 PM
Skills Contest Events
Their are 4 separate competitions that players may choose to particpate.
- 2-on-2 Tournament (players must be on the same BYBA In-Town team and grade level)
- Individual Contests
- Ball Handling / Layups
- Free Throws
- "Hot Shot" -- Shoot Out
Players of all skill levels are invited to participate, compete, and have fun.
Rules of Participation
- Players may compete in 1 event only
- Players choosing to participate in the 2-on-2 tournament, must pair-up with a teammate from his/her In-Town team and grade level
- Late arriving players will not be allowed to compete if his/her event has already finished.
- Those players wishing to compete in the 2-on-2 tournament event must be present for the start of the event. Late arrivals will not be accepted.
- BYBA Team Coaches will assist players in event selection and will provide players an opportunity to practice the event prior to the evening's competition.
Trophies / Awards Ceremony
- Trophies will be presented to 1st and 2nd place finishers for each grade level at the BYBA Awards Ceremony on Saturday afternoon, March 12th
Contests Descriptions and Rules

Two on Two
This contest is a single elimination tournament that will allow players to demonstrate their individual talents in regards to not only dribbling, shooting, but passing and defense. Contest rules:

2 on 2 teams must play on the same BYBA "in town" team.

Each BYBA team can enter only 1 team per grade level.

Game Scoring
-
Games for the 7th and 8th grade levels will be to seven by one’s. The Winner must win by 2 with the maximum of nine points (i.e. 8-8 becomes sudden death; 9-8 wins).

Games for the 3rd & 4th grade level and the 5th & 6th grade level will be to five. A team must still win by two, with a maximum of seven points (i.e. 6-6 becomes sudden death; 7-6 wins).

Game Rules

When a team scores a basket the other team will take the ball out at the top of the key.

The ball must be passed to start play.

Each team will have three (3) fouls to give before the other side can take a foul shot. If a team is in the penalty and fouls, the person fouled will have only one shot, In the case of a shooting foul, the team fouled will have 1 shot and then retain possession of the ball.

A maximum time limit on games may be imposed at the discretion of League Coordinators and BYBA officials
Ball Handling / Layups
The contest will help to develop eye-hand coordination resulting in better dribbling skills. The contest is also designed to develop dribbling skills with both hands, which are necessary prerequisites for advanced skill development. Contest rules:

Player starts out-of-bounds underneath a basket on a signal by the timer. Cones are placed 10 ft. apart with the first one 10 ft. from basket.

Player dribbles through cones in a figure 8 pattern changing dribbling hands after passing each cone.

When reaching the last cone, the player switches dribbling hands and returns to the starting line shooting a lay-up from the right side until it is made.

The process is repeated, but the lay-up is taken from the left side until it is made.

Scoring is based on the amount of time it takes to complete the course PLUS any penalty seconds.

5 second penalty for a missed cone;

5 second penalty for failure to switch dribbling hands;

5 second penalty for dribbling with two hands;

Players are given 2 trials. The lower score of the 2 trials is taken.
Free Throw Shooting
This contest promotes shooting skill player development. Contest rules:

Contest will consist of ten (10) free throws
-
Player who makes the most free throw out of ten will be the winner.

Ties will be resolved by a 5-shot playoff.
"Hot Shot" -- Shoot Out
This contest combines shooting accuracy from many court locations combined with dribbling, rebounding, and quickness. Contest rules:

Each participant will have one minute to score as many points as possible from the various "Hot Shot" locations.

There is a limit of 2 layups, and a 3 point bonus is awarded if at least one shot is made from EACH of the 5 spots.

Highest score wins. Ties will be resolved by a 45-second round.
Hot Shots Locations / Points
Hot Shots A and E: Layups (2 points)
Hot Shot B: Left of Lane from 12 feet (4 points)
Hot Shot C: Top of Key from 15 feet (5 points)
Hot Shot D: Right of Lane from 10 feet (3 points)
